The head of Illinois’ youth prison system said he is “extremely concerned” by a recent Justice Department report that found Illinois has one of the highest rates of sexual assault against young inmates in the country.

A team of experts will review policies and procedures at the state’s six youth prisons in response to a federal survey of incarcerated youth in which 15 percent of Illinois inmates reported they were victims of sexual assault by staff or other inmates, Department of Juvenile Justice Director Arthur Bishop said last week.
